Many are the corners of the planet where you can find great gems of the so-called rock art. However, without a doubt, one of the most important representations of it is in Spain, specifically in the famous Cave of Altamira, which is located in the Cantabrian municipality of Santillana del Mar and is considered by many as the “ Sistine Chapel ”of the aforementioned rock art.
It was discovered at the end of the 19th century, specifically in 1868 by a tejero named Modesto Cubillas and has been listed as World Heritage since 1985. In addition to that it is worth knowing other interesting data such as the following:
-Its discoverer seems that he did not get anyone interested in what he had found and only showed some curiosity a rich local owner of Paleontology who responded to the name of Marcelino Sanz de Sautuola.
-The engravings and paintings he possesses are considered to belong to the Magdalenian, Solutrense, Gravetiense and Auriñacense periods.
-Most of the works discovered have been cataloged as belonging to the “Franco-Cantabrian school”. This is identified, above all, because it bets remarkably for the realism of the figures represented.
-Among the most important paintings that this Cave of Altamira has stand out the Great Deer, which with its 2.25 meters is the largest of all; the Shrunk Bison, which is one of the most admired by art experts; and the ocher horse, which is part of the oldest group.
It should be noted, on the other hand, that plants that grow on stony ground receive the qualification of rock houses, such as the Rock Phagnalon (a semi-bush of the Mediterranean region) and the Rock Sedum (a herbaceous plant that can reach thirty centimeters in height).
